Recently, Sveza Group has successfully completed the process of laying up birch logs for the summer in the areas of operation. This winter, the company harvested and put to summer storage 1.6 times more timber than in 2023.

Sveza was one of the first in the Russian forest industry to introduce over-summer storage of timber under snow in 2013. Since 2017, it has been implemented in all regions of Russia where the company has operations: in the St. Petersburg, Tyumen, Ekaterinburg, Vologda, Kostroma, and Perm Regions.

The company-wide process of laying up birch logs for summer started last December and finished early this month. The mills are completing the last steps to cover the logs with insulating material.

“Every winter Sveza puts birch logs up for snow storage to secure supply of timber for the summer and fall months. This season, we have laid up for storage 62% more birch timber than in the previous season,” — says Sergey Kroshkin, Head of Wood Procurement at Sveza.

Over-summer storage of timber under snow is one of the best ways to preserve timber harvested in winter during the summer and fall. Timber is buried under snow; the pile is compacted and then covered with wood chips. The snow under the chips will not melt even in the hottest weather, just like in the freezer. Birch logs stored in the summer under the snow provide high-quality grade veneer and ensure stability of operations through summer and fall.
