Sveza Resource is on, forest resources are up!

Sveza Resource is on, forest resources are up!

Sveza Resource is a dedicated forestry subdivision of Sveza Group, established in 2019. It carries out timber harvesting operations for Sveza, while performing the full scope of forest management, conservation, and reforestation activities on its forest leases. Every year Sveza spends around 40 million rubles on forest conservation. Sveza Resource plants more trees each year and implements improved harvesting techniques that help conserve biodiversity.

March 21 is the International Day of Forests. It was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests on the Earth and the need to preserve natural resources. The theme for International Day of Forests 2022 is “Forests and sustainable production and consumption”. Today, wood is used in many aspects of our lives, including construction, transport, consumer industry and even space exploration.

Sveza is one of the largest companies in the Russian forest industry. The company is committed to sustainability principles and has recently revised its strategy to place greater focus on increasing timber utilization efficiency for the benefit of the environment and for the well-being of the future generations.

Sveza’s forest management practices are based on the principles of sustainable forestry. The company carries out full scope of reforestation activities on its forest leases. Sveza protects forests from fires, and implements initiatives to protect and conserve biodiversity, including the diversity of tree species. Sveza works only with wood suppliers and contractors that guarantee the highest quality of reforestation efforts, and makes sure that they strictly comply with the forestry legislation and standards.

In 2019, Sveza established Sveza Resource, a timber harvesting subdivision in charge of the company’s forest leases. Sveza Resource’s operation base under long-term forest lease agreements is 630,000 ha in three regions of Russia: Perm, Vologda, and Kostroma. The company employs more than 200 people of various professions.

Reforestation is an important part of Sveza Resource’s scope of responsibility. In 2021, the company planted more than 1.3 million trees, which is 11% more than a year earlier. Containerized seedlings and good care of them are key to the success of the reforestation efforts of the company.

While it is important to plant trees and grow forests, it is also crucial to protect the forests from fire. Wildfires cause great damage to nature, disrupt forestry activities, and negatively affect human health and safety. Sveza spends around 40 million rubles on forest conservation annually. During wildfire seasons, the company lends its equipment and machinery to the fire brigades of the local communities.

“Forests are a unique instrument for combating climate change, and the global community must work together to preserve them. Forest industry operators take full responsibility for their forest leases and commit to conservation of biodiversity and controlled restoration of forest resources. It is a natural responsibility of the society to take care of forests and raise awareness of the importance of the conservation efforts at all levels,” says Alexander Protchenko, Head of Forest Management at Sveza.
