Sveza social projects reach new levels
Sveza, a global leader in birch plywood production, has prioritized sustainable development and social responsibility as the most important areas of strategic development for the next few years. The company has been providing a consistent support for various socially oriented projects for a long time but this year heralds a completely new stage based on a systematic approach. Integrated regional development programs aimed at improving the quality of life of the local population are designed and are already being implemented on the initiative of Sveza in the regions where it operates. In 2021 the socially oriented investments will total about RUB 35 million.

The goal of any business is performance growth and continuous development. But no development is possible in isolation from the community and environment. That is why more and more companies are devoting attention to the sustainable development principles. In March 2020, Sveza joined the United Nations Global Compact and officially committed itself to operating in harmony with the nature and community. And as early as at the beginning of 2021, the company commenced using the new approaches to the corporate social responsibility, gradually shifting from the provision of request-based aid to institutions and organizations to systemic socially-oriented investments.

Sveza has taken the initiative to develop integrated programs that are designed to lay the foundation for more serious changes in the regions where enterprises of the group operate rather than just help with solving some immediate social problems. Thanks to active support of the local authorities, the first Program of Social and Economic Development of Manturovo, the town in Kostroma Oblast, was launched in February 2021. A similar program for the township of Uralsky (Perm Krai) is under development.

The commitments made by businesses, authorities, NPOs and local communities have quite material manifestations including infrastructure construction, support for education and healthcare systems as well as other measures to improve the standard and quality of life in the regions where, due to geographical and economic conditions, there are rather many social problems.

Four of the seven Sveza mills are city-forming enterprises. That is why it is so important for the company to keep the working-age population interested in continuing to live and work in these regions. The priorities for the current year include the projects aimed at the creation of a comfortable urban environment, development of mass sport and healthy lifestyle, protection of the environment and popularization of blue-collar jobs. Thus, a rope park is under construction in the township of Verkhnyaya Sinyachikha in the Sverdlovsk Oblast and in Saint Petersburg, with the support of Sveza, there is opened a skate park where children from low-income families can practice. In the Perm Krai, a hockey rink in the township of Uralsky was completely renovated on the initiative of the population, businesses and local authorities. Sveza acted as a co-investor and assumed responsibility for the maintenance of the sports ground. In the microdistrict where Saint Petersburg mill is located there is developed a nature trail and landscaping is carried out in the area around it and in the township of Novator of Velikoustyugsky District the landscaping is in process in Glory communal garden.

Along with the above mentioned activities, the company continues to use traditional charity methods, supports the socially disadvantaged population groups and people in difficult life situations, allocates funds to the development of sports and creative projects in the regions where it operates. Traditionally, the company is a sponsor of local children’s and adult teams. In some regions such projects are implemented in partnership with Severgroup companies as well as federal NPOs. For example, in the Vologda Oblast we continuously cooperate with Road Home Foundation to support Velikoustyugsky children’s home.

“More and more companies throughout the world are affirming their commitment to sustainable development principles and changing the environment around them for the better. For us it is a serious meticulous work in close contact with local communities, with those interested in the development of their native region. Every project is focused on people and our programs are implemented first and foremost for people. Our investments are aimed at not only conserving resources but also at augmenting them for our employees and their families to be confident about the future,” said Valentina Likhacheva, Director for Corporate Communications and Sustainable Development at Sveza.
